Alopecia is the scientific name for all types of excess hair loss. Although you should not panic from every hair left on the comb or pillow (the conditional rate of loss is 150 hairs per day), in certain cases you should still think about a visit to the doctor.

When should you contact a specialist?

If you feel that the hair began to fall out much more (and believe me, you will not miss this moment), if you look at yourself in the mirror, you see that the central parting diverges in the shape of a herringbone or the temporal part is thinning - this is the very reason to start sound the alarm. Try a simple experiment: take a photograph of yourself five or ten years ago and compare it to the reflection in a mirror. If the thickness of your hair has remained the same - great, if not - sign up for a trichologist (a dermatologist who diagnoses, prevents and treats diseases of the hair and scalp). It is also worth contacting a specialist for those who cannot grow long hair, and for those who feel permanent dry hair. In the latter case, it can be a marker of certain diseases.

Types of hair loss

Androgenic type. It occurs in both men and women. But women are in a slightly more privileged position, since, unlike men, they do not completely go bald.

There is a myth that androgenetic alopecia is hair loss due to high levels of testosterone in the blood. In fact, as the world statistics show, 90% of patients bring ideal tests of sex hormones to the appointment. Each case is different. In men, for example, both high and low testosterone levels can lead to hair loss.

Diffuse type. Every person faces it: this type manifests itself after severe and prolonged stress, taking medications, high fever, chronic diseases, long-term infections, pregnancy and childbirth.

Alopecia areata. The most unpleasant and difficult to treat type. Here we have to deal with the moment, paradoxical for medicine, when our own immune system begins to attack the hair follicles. The main reasons are heredity and autoimmune diseases. It can manifest itself in the form of focal hair loss (on the head and body) and take the most severe forms in the form of complete baldness of the head, absence of eyelashes and eyebrows. The sooner this type of alopecia shows itself, the worse.

The first foci, as a rule, overgrow, but without any prerequisites, they can appear again and again. This type of baldness can occur in both adults and children. “When a child with alopecia areata is brought to me for an appointment, I immediately ask a question - whether he took immunomodulators or antiviral drugs. In nine cases out of ten the answer is yes, - says Tamara Berechikidze. - I want to make a separate emphasis on this: Russia is the leader in sales of immunomodulators. What are we doing? Bypassing the tests and visits to immunologists, we go straight to the pharmacy and ask for "something for immunity." And at what cost we stimulate it - nobody knows. Therefore, there is at least one way to protect yourself - just do not take immunomodulators without any reason.

Prevention and treatment methods

Shampoos

Hair loss shampoos are pure marketing water. The only function they perform is to cleanse the scalp. However, proper cleansing is important for healthy hair, especially when sebum production is high. Sulfates do an excellent job with this task - they open hair scales and wash away impurities. Sulfates have only one "but" - they dry out the hair. The latter consist of keratin, so after washing, a mask with keratin in the composition should be applied for at least 15 minutes. Is there a time? Leave it on for an hour. And if your hair is greasy, avoid the root zone.

Injection procedures

To date, plasma therapy - the improvement of the hair and scalp with the introduction of platelet-rich plasma of the patient - is the only minimally invasive method that works, which has a solid evidence base with clinical trials.

How does plasma therapy work? By reducing the release of sebum, it normalizes skin pH and blocks hair loss. New ones grow on average 30% thicker. And a great bonus: the growth rate doubles.

Supplements

In order for a trichologist to be able to correctly prescribe dietary supplements, he ideally needs to be savvy in nutritional issues. The first thing that a competent specialist will tell you is to throw out all the advertised complexes "for hair growth". Only based on the results of the tests, the doctor will be able to prescribe the supplements, proportions and dosage regimen suitable for you. After all, who would have known that, for example, the simultaneous intake of iron and vitamin B12 does not make sense - they simply will not be absorbed by the body. And hypervitaminosis can provoke a fall in other indicators important for the body.

Scalp preparations

One of the most common cosmetic preparations for the scalp, which is prescribed by trichologists, is "Minoxidil". A non-hormonal agent was invented back in the 70s to reduce blood pressure. It was not useful to solve this problem, but it proved to be an excellent hair growth stimulator and was approved by the US Department of Food and Drug Safety. All preparations that need to be rubbed into the scalp require consistency in application - in a course, day after day, without gaps. It doesn't work otherwise.

Curious fact

Hair is often referred to as an indicator of health. Therefore, often, coming to an appointment with a trichologist, the patient may learn about a thyroid disease - for example, this will be indicated by the loss of hairs of the outer third of the eyebrow.>
