Where to begin
It is possible to prepare the skin for a beautiful and even tan not only with the help of cosmetics, but also using biologically active complexes with a special composition. “It is better to start taking dietary supplements with antioxidants at least two weeks before the period of active sun exposure and continue throughout the summer season,” notes Alexander Antonov, cosmetologist, expert of the Advanced Nutrition Program nutrient brand. - Ultraviolet radiation is the main source of the formation of harmful free radicals that damage everything in its path: proteins, lipids, DNA, cell membranes. 5-15 minutes of radiation leads to the loss of 70-90% of the skin's antioxidants, accelerating the aging process. This means that to prepare the skin for sunburn, you need to take antioxidants that can absorb free radicals."
Potent plant antioxidants that work in all layers of the skin include extracts of turmeric, green tea, grape seed and blueberry, as well as lutein, lycopene and beta-carotene, Antonov said. These components in the composition of dietary supplements will provide immunostimulating, anti-inflammatory and photoprotective effects.

“Before going on vacation, you should exfoliate your face and body so that your tan lays evenly,” says Igor Patrin, dermatologist, cosmetologist and medical expert at Institut Esthederm. - For the body, you can use a scrub, for example, sugar-based, and for the face, a gentle scrub with artificial abrasive particles or an enzyme peel. And do not forget about high-quality hydration: serums with hyaluronic acid paired with a moisturizer for your skin type. It is also worth adding foods with carotenoids to the diet in advance, such as tomatoes, carrots, peppers, cherries, oranges and peaches."
To maintain a beautiful tan longer, Alexander Antonov advises taking biologically active complexes containing omega-3 fatty acids. “It prevents collagen, the main building block responsible for skin elasticity, from breaking down,” the doctor emphasizes. - Also, omega-6 (gamma-linolenic acid obtained from evening primrose) will help prolong tanning. It accelerates metabolic processes in the cell, eliminates skin flaking, dryness and itching, has an anti-inflammatory effect and strengthens the skin's immune barrier.
Sunscreen
What is the main danger of the sun for the skin? “The sun emits ultraviolet rays, which are of three types: A, B and C,” says Elena Pasternak, dermatologist, cosmetologist, trichologist, head of the medical department of the official representative office of Sesderma in Russia. - Ultraviolet C rays have a radiation effect on the body, but most of them do not pass through the atmosphere. Type A beams provoke the early appearance of wrinkles, which occurs due to a decrease in the elasticity of collagen fibers. Prolonged exposure to type B radiation leads to burns and redness of the skin, as well as thickening of the stratum corneum.
You cannot completely discount the sun. “UV rays promote the production of vitamin D and have a bactericidal effect, which is why they are also called dangerous friends,” says Sergey Khachaturyan, senior training manager at Shiseido.

How to understand the composition:
- The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) designation is a type B (UVB) sun protection factor. The PPD (Persistent Pigment Darkening) badge reflects the degree of protection against rays of type A (UVA). The swimmer's drawing (Water Resistant) will tell you that the product is waterproof.
- Chemical and physical filters. “Among the first, you need to choose those that have protection against types of radiation A and B (this is always suggested by the instructions on the packaging of the product, for example, tinosorba),” notes Ksenia Kirillova, dermatologist and cosmetologist, medical expert of the Bioderma brand. - Such filters also work against photoaging. Physical filters (micro-powders of metals: titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) reflect sunlight, often cause less reactions on the skin and are often preferred in the presence of inflammation, which means there will be less risk of skin burns.
- Caring components. “To help the skin protect itself from damage by external aggressive factors, restore and maintain youthfulness, many manufacturers add caring components to the composition of the products,” says Daria Sadukha, expert of Helen Rubinstein and Biotherm brands. "They will not only strengthen their own protective barrier, but also help to actively recover from the effects of the sea, wind and salt, which make the skin more vulnerable to UV rays."
How to apply the product:
- “The product should be applied 20-30 minutes before it appears on the beach or in the sun,” says Sergey Khachaturyan, senior training manager at Shiseido. - And if you are going to the beach, then apply the product on the body without a swimsuit so that the area under the shoulder straps, for example, is protected. Renew beach application every 1.5-2 hours.”
- Do not spare funds. “Apply about half a teaspoon or two large peas to your face,” advises Valeria Khokhlova, Lancôme skincare expert. - Avoid being in the sun during peak hours (12pm to 4pm).
The skin can protect itself from ultraviolet radiation on its own, but only in the first 10-30 minutes. “The skin has a natural level of SPF, which provides partial protection from UVB rays and depends on the phototype of the person,” says Elena Pasternak. - The most commonly used classification for phototype is Fitzpatrick, in which there are six types: Celtic, Nordic (Aryan), Dark European, Mediterranean (South European), Indonesian (Middle Eastern) and African American. In Russia, the second, third and fourth types are more common: the skin and eyes of such people are light, and the hair is light blond or brown. The tan lays down badly. People with this type of skin should choose sunscreen with SPF 50+ when exposed to direct sunlight."

“Sun protection can be divided into daily (city protection) and beach protection,” says Valeria Khokhlova, Lancôme care expert. "The activity of UV radiation depends on the geographical location, so a resident of central Russia thinks less about sunscreen than a resident of Australia." According to the expert, when going to Europe for the summer, you should pay attention to what the UV index is in a given city, if 3-4, then the minimum should be SPF 15, if the UV index is 5 or higher, then you need to start with SPF 30.
You should remember your phototype and avoid the active sun with the help of hats, glasses and clothing. For those who spend the summer at the beach, we recommend products with an SPF of 30 or higher and a broad spectrum of protection (UVA / UVB designation on the package).

The amount of UV light will also not be the same depending on the season and weather conditions. “For example, in the European part of Russia, the maximum concentration of ultraviolet radiation is in July,” says Svetlana Lukina, Caudalie's marketing director in Russia. - The height above sea level is also important: the higher you go, the higher the amount of ultraviolet radiation (+ 3% every 700 m), and the latitude: the closer to the equator, the stronger the rays and their impact. Do not ignore the risk of UV reverberation on white sand and snow (+ 83% UV), as well as wind, humidity, cloudiness - all these can reduce the feeling of warmth and cause greater risk."
Igor Patrin, a dermatologist, cosmetologist and medical expert of the Institut Esthederm brand, advises that in order to adapt fair skin to the sun and prepare it for tanning, gradually go out into the sun, stay in the shade more and reduce the level of SPF protection. That is, start with a maximum of 50+ and go down, depending on the desired effect and the skin tone acquired.
Another important factor when choosing a product is the type of skin: dry, oily or combination. Can you define it yourself? “You have dry skin, if there is a feeling of tightness in the cheeks or all over your face,” says Daria Sadukha, expert at Helena Rubinstein and Biotherm. "The pores are almost invisible, and the skin seems thin, there are peeling, irritation and redness, increased sensitivity and dull complexion."
The skin is combined, prone to dryness, if in the T-zone (bridge of the nose, nose) it is in good condition, and in the U-zone (cheekbones, chin) - dry and dehydrated, with an unpleasant feeling of tightness. Combination skin with a tendency to oily is produced by a brighter T-zone of the face with visible, enlarged pores in this area and a U-zone without special needs.
The skin is definitely oily, if the face shines (most of all in the middle of the day), inflammation occurs regularly. It is distinguished by enlarged pores, uneven texture, and the presence of black dots. Makeup on such skin is easily lubricated and flows.

With the onset of summer, many change their skin and body care, but forget about their hair. After 5-7 days in the hot sun, the result will be disastrous. “The sun's rays, although they give our hair a pleasant light shade, can at the same time destroy their structure,” says Olga Muravyeva, expert and technologist at Kérastase. - Hair loses its elasticity, color pigment of colored hair is destroyed, color intensity is lost. For summer hair care, hair products should contain protective filters, antioxidants and strengthening ingredients that will make hair stronger and thicker. It is important to follow three simple steps in summer hair care: cleansing with shampoo, using a rinse off (milk or mask) and protecting your hair with a spray or cream."
Errors and misconceptions about sun protection:
- “Spectrum A rays penetrate clouds and even through window pane in all weather conditions, especially in the southern regions. Therefore, owners of dark skin also need to use products to avoid burns and premature aging of the skin, - notes Sergey Khachaturyan, senior training manager at Shiseido.
- “Sunbathing acne is wrong. The rays exacerbate the problem of the presence of inflammation on the skin,”says Daria Sadukha, expert of Helena Rubinstein and Biotherm brands.
- “There is an opinion that owners of fair skin should go to a solarium before a beach vacation,” says Igor Patrin, dermatologist, cosmetologist and medical expert of Institut Esthederm. "A tanning bed is just as bad for the skin as the sun and causes photoaging."
- “Products labeled SPF100 are banned for release in the European Union. Products with SPF50 + protect from the sun by 99%,”says Elena Pasternak.
- “There is no better time for tanning,” recalls Daria Sadukha, expert at Helena Rubinstein and Biotherm. - It is known for certain that the sun's rays lead to premature age-related skin changes. Therefore, if the goal of care is to preserve youth, you should completely abandon sunbathing. "
- “So far, the only place where it is impossible to sunbathe is a dark room without light,” notes Valeria Khokhlova, Lancome care expert. "No sunscreen is 100% blocking UV radiation."
- “There are two main reasons why we burn out even with sunscreen,” says Svetlana Lukina, Caudalie Marketing Director in Russia. - First: with an active sun, you can get a sunburn in a few seconds. Sunburn appears on the skin from six hours to one day after sun exposure. Second: misuse of protection. The duration is determined by the protection factor on the package SPF 15, 30 or 50. The higher the number, the longer the effect of the cream in time. Always renew the sun protection layer upon contact with water. "

After returning from the beach, first of all, you need to take a shower and wash off the remnants of salt and SPF from your skin. You can then use any moisturizer if you have dry skin. For dehydrated skin, the Caudalie expert advises using nutritious foods. Products containing oils that restore the skin and enhance the regeneration processes are perfect: shea butter, shea butter, almond, coconut oils and others. In addition, products containing antioxidants are good, as they protect skin cells from premature aging, prevent the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and preserve the molecules responsible for skin youth (collagen and elastin).
Sunscreens for children
Exposure to direct sunlight is contraindicated for a baby during the first six months of life. “The skin of babies is significantly different in its anatomical and physiological characteristics and continues to form after the birth of a child,” notes Alexander Prokofiev, dermatovenerologist and medical expert of the La Roche-Posay brand. - Its surface area is much larger than that of adults, so it loses heat more strongly, and the superficial protective layer of the skin, the epidermis, is much thinner and more vulnerable. For example, if an adult needs to be in the active sun for 20 minutes to get a burn, then a baby needs 5-7 minutes."

According to the expert, the remedy must be chosen according to the age of the child. If the age is not indicated on the packaging, but simply “children's” is written, this means that the product is intended for children from three years old. Sunscreen must contain protection against UVB and UVA radiation. The child is more active and sweats more, so it is better that the product is waterproof. It must be applied 15–20 minutes before sun exposure and renewed after 1.5–2 hours - this rule applies both on the beach and in the city.
The consumption of the cream for a child is approximately the following: face and neck - ¼ teaspoon, both hands - ½ spoon, both legs - 1 spoon, torso - 1 spoon. In total, approximately 3 teaspoons of sunscreen will be required per application. It is necessary to cover the whole body with it, even on areas of the skin that will be hidden by clothing.
After returning from the beach, the child needs to be bathed in order to withdraw the remaining funds. “You can shower with a mild cleansing agent, preferably oil-based,” says Ksenia Kirillova, dermatologist and cosmetologist, medical expert of the Bioderma brand. "Then you need to moisturize the skin to replenish the moisture lost on the beach and restore water balance."
