How a childhood hobby became a big fashion
On the catwalk, beads appear regularly: they are abundantly embroidered with evening dresses and decorated with shoes, and brooches are made of them. In this form, the bright grains, from which children used to braid baubles during extended school hours or quiet hours in the camp, do not look so playful and simple. Beads found their former connotation in 2018, when bags woven from this material came into fashion. They were produced (and are still being produced) by the brands Shrimps, Ganni and Susan Alexandra, who, in addition to the surface, handle and strap of the accessory, laid out ornaments in the form of butterflies, cacti and cherries from beads.
In the same year, the Dior cruise collection appeared on sale, combining Western and hippie styles. In addition to flying dresses, embroidered ponchos, rough boots and cowboy hats, it includes baubles that were shown in close-ups in the Dior advertising campaign with Jennifer Lawrence several months before the release. The public's reaction was not long in coming: they began to buy baubles from more democratic brands - Zara, ASOS and H&M, which promptly added jewelry to their collections, as well as weave themselves - from multi-colored floss threads, interspersed or entirely from beads.
In 2019, the brands Jacquemus, Isabel Marant and Lanvin joined the handicraft circle. They began to weave not only baubles, but also other bracelets, beads and even earrings, often combining beads, pearls, gold and silver in one product. At the same time, specialized jewelry manufacturers, using the technology of stringing beads on a string, replaced beads with multi-colored natural stones. So, the assortment of the California brand Harwell Godfrey includes beads made of agate, angelite, coral, morganite, quartz, rhodonite, tiger's eye and Afghan lapis lazuli. However, this is very different from jewelry from childhood - both in materials and in price.

Who makes bead jewelry abroad
Authentic jewelry today is created by the éliou brand, which is patronized by Gigi Hadid and Dakota Fanning. At first, the creators of éliou, friends Christina Mantilla and Duda Teixeira, made beads, keychains and rings from sea shells that they found while traveling, and when the travels stopped (all the fault, of course, the coronavirus pandemic), they added more accessible materials to the materials, but not less showy beads. Girls began to make not only traditional jewelry out of it, but also eyeglass laces, asymmetrical earrings and hairpins. Sometimes a row of rainbow beads is interrupted by pearls or a nazar amulet, as well as pebbles with letters that form words or whole phrases.
Another brand that periodically flashes on Instagram is the Korean yOungly yOungley. She specializes in weaving earrings and rings that take the form of handbags or bunches of berries. Sometimes a beaded ring is complemented by a large artificial stone, the shine of which in the sun is not inferior to natural. A similar one comes with a Barbie doll.
In turn, the Greek brand Mathe uses multi-colored beads to knock the pride off conservative pearls and, accordingly, make the image more relaxed, childish and bright. These two elements, which contrast not only in style but also in size, are crafted into earrings, ankle bracelets and multi-row beads, named after bohemian summer resorts from Miami to Puerto Rico. In this case, beads can be not only traditionally round, but also, for example, rectangular, cone-shaped, trapezoidal, in the shape of stars, flowers or hearts. Sometimes they imitate chain links - another trendy accessory from 2020.

Who makes bead jewelry in Russia
The Hiaynderfyt brand has become one of the most mentioned in the Russian media largely thanks to its customers in the person of TV presenter Anastasia Ivleeva, founder of the Arctic Explorer brand Ksenia Chilingarova, singer Luna and model Sasha Panika. True, the brand is not Russian, but Belarusian: its founder, 23-year-old Mikita Kunitskiy, weaves cheerful emoticons, berries, flowers and fruits from beads. They either hang from the necklace like pendants, or strung on threads along with natural stones and keshi pearls, or woven into the structure of accessories - for example, bags and phone cases (yes, they are also in the Hiaynderfyt assortment). You shouldn't think about the meaning of the brand name: this is a random set of letters that Mikita typed on the keyboard.
Despite the infantile design, Hiaynderfyt jewelry is worn not only by girls, but also by guys. Photographer Vlad Zorin combines a beaded necklace with a brutal chain, makeup artist Sergei Naumov chooses jewelry with his initials, stylist Alexander Rogov puts on beads in several rows, and musician Yegor Creed stylizes a blank T-shirt with them. Beads are the new word in the fight against toxic masculinity - just like pearls, which appeared this winter at the Dior Men, Hed Mayner, Casablanca and Palomo Spain shows.
Beaded products are also worn by director Mikhail Khasaya, whose wife, actress Irina Martynenko, has launched the Busiki.bijou jewelry brand in quarantine. These are more minimalist bracelets, rings and necklaces that can be worn around the waist, tassel, ankle, or even as a keyring on a belt. Irina learned how to make jewelry on her own, watching video tutorials on YouTube and using not only beads, but also large beads of different shapes and shades.
Petersburg woman Liza Odinokikh, who closed the clothing brand of the same name and retrained as a jewelry designer, finds materials not in publicly available sources, but in flea markets. For example, in the fall collection of her new brand Rebead Please (the name refers to the vintage aesthetics of the project, and also in tune with the phrase “repeat, please” - for those who missed Lisa's work), a choker made of bugles from the 20s will appear. The assortment also includes necklaces, bracelets and rings of interesting shapes, created from glass and ceramic beads, natural stones and pearls.

Mirstores, which specializes in the production of colorful sweaters made from natural wool, launched its bead jewelry brand. Massive necklace-chains, thin necklace-braids, narrow chains of beaded rings and laconic Beaded Breakfast evening rings are made with the same attention to texture and preservation of manual labor: they are pleasant not only to wear, but also to sort out in your hand and examine in the sun.

And these are not all beading adherents: Maniovich AM adds the words “Killer”, “Quarantine” and “Amore” from beads, Rumi adds decor in the form of whales, giraffes and dinosaurs, Vos Studio weaves flower chokers in spirit-lifting shades, and Lapka directs funds from the sale of thin, hardly noticeable bracelets on the hand in favor of the Kaliningrad shelter of homeless animals "Right to Life". A collection of quarantined bead jewelry was also released by Russian designer Zhenya Kim. “In this difficult time I wanted to do something clean, naive and kind - to distract myself, dream, cheer up. I collect hand-made pendants in the shape of men: for some reason I always felt that they were protecting me. I would like these little people to make people happy and keep them company,”Kim said about the idea.

How to make beaded jewelry yourself
If you are interested in making jewelry yourself, just arm yourself with a floss (or fishing line) and beads. It can be bought in almost any hardware and fabric store and in specialized hypermarkets with hobby and handicraft items Leonardo and Golden Fleece. It is better to buy beads of different sizes and colors to make the decoration unusual, and also stock up on large beads with letters or in the shape of a heart, star or flower, so that it is also individual.
To create a simple decoration on the arm or on the neck, you need to cut a thread of the appropriate length, intertwine it with two or three more threads for greater density and alternately string a combination of beads and beads. It is advisable to think over the sequence in advance by placing the beads in a certain order on the table. At the end, you need to make a knot, which will subsequently be easy to untie, or use the techniques of lacing necklaces and bracelets, which needlewomen share on YouTube.
In addition, you can find patterns for weaving more complex bead jewelry - for example, baubles or beads in several rows. However, here it is better to first think over the appearance of the future jewelry, and only then get poisoned with the purchase of beads and beads. Some beading kits have patterns drawn directly on the packaging or on the separate brochure included in the kit. But in general, beaded jewelry is a free field for self-expression without any restrictions, prescriptions and rules. And that's why we loved them so much in childhood.>
