In 10 years, interest in colored gemstones has grown by 70% in total, and 12% of this growth has occurred in the last year, according to the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index. The unambiguous favorites of the colored stones market are pink and blue diamonds (their prices are growing or remain stable), but since last autumn we can definitely talk about a large-scale - not only investor, but also consumer - boom for yellow diamonds. Although, according to the Fancy Color Research Foundation, an organization that studies the demand and price dynamics for colored diamonds of various sizes and shades, in 2018 yellow diamonds as a whole showed a decline of 2.1%, only large stones weighing more than 5 carats grew.

The main deposits of yellow diamonds are located in Africa: Angola, Central Africa, Congo and Sierra Leone, and it was the mines of these countries that first gave the market yellow stones. Subsequently, yellow diamonds were discovered in Brazil, Australia and Borneo. For a long time, the main supplier of high-quality yellow diamonds to the market (about 50%) was the now closed Australian mine Ellendale (from where all ordinary yellow diamonds of Tiffany & Co originated). Today, Canada and Yakutia are the main suppliers of yellow diamonds to the market.

At the end of September in Hong Kong, the domestic concern ALROSA will hold the second True Colors auction. The collection includes around 200 fancy diamonds, of which the 18.07-carat intense pear-shaped diamond and the 6.78-carat vivid yellow emerald cut diamond are particularly noteworthy. Exactly a year ago, Alrosa presented an unprecedented collection of 250 colored diamonds at a similar auction. The sensation of the auction was a yellow specimen with a rich color fancy vivid orangy yellow, unique purity VVS2 and weighing 15.11 carats. The stone broke the $ 9 million mark. For the world market, its sale became a kind of indulgence for the active promotion of colored - and mainly yellow - diamonds.

In February, Lady Gaga entered the Oscar red carpet wearing the famous Tiffany & Co yellow diamond (the fancy yellow cushion weighs 128.54 carats). In March, at Baselworld, the Graff jewelery company showed two pairs of watches set entirely in yellow diamonds: The Round Graff Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond round with 211 diamonds weighing 59.25 carats and the oval Graff Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond Watch with 60 diamonds totaling 25. 85 ct. The popularization of yellow stones was supported by British Vogue, having published material on how to choose an engagement ring with a "boring" yellow diamond.

Colorless diamonds, of course, are always girls' main friends and are the first to buy. But as soon as the first hunger in the classics segment is satisfied, customers begin to look for variety. First, they experiment with cuts (from round to cushion and octagon), and then with color. Yellow is the most affordable of the beautiful colors (we're not talking about brown). The cost of a carat of a yellow stone is $ 7-14 thousand, and a pink or blue $ 100-500 thousand. With an increase in carat, the price rises rapidly: the rarity of the stone greatly affects its value.

Real natural yellow diamonds, not just dull colorless, are found in a ratio of 1 in 10 thousand stones. Depending on the intensity of the color, they can be only slightly darker than colorless, or they can be of a bright, saturated yellow hue. For the intensity of the yellow color in the stone, nitrogen is responsible, wedged between the hydrogen molecules. The lightest color, "champagne", starts with the "O" and "P" categories. The top value for colorless diamonds falls on the letters D and E, after which the quality of the characteristic decreases. The value "O" is obtained by colorless stones with light yellow blotches - in other words, the lightest yellow ones actually start with a colorless line. Surprisingly, yellow diamonds are labeled according to wine characteristics - from champagne to cognac.

The fancy category denotes the pronounced presence of a yellow hue, and its intensity is described by the characteristics of light, intense, vivid (light, saturated, bright). The best-selling and popular colors in Russia are fancy light yellow and fancy yellow. But the shades intense and vivid, which sometimes even have a noticeable orange tone, are still underestimated. Probably, the caution of Russian customers towards rich yellows is primarily due not to the price (although they are more expensive than fancy yellow and fancy light yellow), but to a lack of understanding of their value. To an unsophisticated eye, such stones look unnaturally bright, more like yellow sapphires, yellow beryls or citrines (by the way, there are quite a few of these yellow stones in the latest collections of high jewelry). To show the difference between shades,I have collected a unique line of reference standards for my jewelry house Darvol: seven diamonds from light yellow to fancy vivid. As far as I know, even large gemological centers do not have this in Russia.

According to the Fancy Color Research Foundation, in 2018, the most significant price increase, by 1.5%, was shown by the shade fancy vivid, in turn, fancy intense rose by 0.7%, while fancy yellow stones fell by 3.9%. although this is a good sign for investors: it is better to buy at the lower levels of values.>
