First iPhone 8 and Apple Watch reviews

Tomorrow in the US and other countries of the first wave will begin selling iPhone 8. No, not the one without frames and the Home button, but a "regular iPhone" - this time with a glass cover. Reporters from leading publications received review samples about a week ago, and the first reviews of the new generation of the world's main smartphone appeared online.

As expected, our overseas colleagues liked the novelty - although it did not cause much enthusiasm. This is the on-call iPhone update and the best iPhone to date, but it is destined to remain in the shadow of the iPhone X that goes on sale.

“… Many will buy this iPhone, - wrote the editor-in-chief of The Verge Nilai Patel in his review, - someone will upgrade to it under a contract with a mobile operator, someone will need to replace the old model, which has become too slow, but someone will simply you need a phone here and now. This is Apple's new "standard" phone, and it's actually great that in this case, "standard" means something so good. But this is not the future and this is not the cutting edge of technology. This is the standard. It's just an iPhone."

Wired's David Pearce came to the same conclusion: “If you want a great iPhone, this is it. I would recommend buying the Plus version if you can, of course, get along with its size, because the camera capabilities and battery life will not be superfluous. However, both models are fantastic smartphones, even better than last year's. But if you want to be part of the future, save your money for now. And then buy the iPhone X on them to understand what really lies ahead."

But the journalists received the updated Apple Watch not so unambiguously. There is only one reason - an incorrectly working cellular module in the watch from some reviewers. The device had a bad connection, it was difficult to connect to the Internet, which makes it simply impossible to make calls with their help. In addition, in the "cellular" mode, the series 3 rapidly depletes the battery, and the watch itself often connects to unknown Wi-Fi networks instead of receiving data via LTE. Apple has acknowledged the problem and promised to fix it in updates.

Lauren Goode from the same The Verge gave the new product five points out of ten - and this is the lowest rating that Apple products have received over the entire existence of this portal. “Apple is constantly promising us 'magic' in its products,” Lauren writes, “and in this case, this magic should be that you can leave the house without your phone, while feeling calm, knowing that you will not miss important messages. or calls. But with Apple Watch 3, you won't be able to feel at ease, because this wholeness, called "magic", is not there. There should be no problems with the transition from Bluetooth to Wi-Fi, from Wi-Fi to LTE. Music streaming? Not available yet. Podcast streaming? Also. Does Siri work reliably? No, not in my case."

True, there is only one such devastating review on the network so far: David Pearce from Wired complained only about the low battery life (otherwise he liked the novelty), and the editor of The New York Times generally recommended them for purchase: “Apple Watch Series 3 is the first sign that wearable computers are maturing and, over time, can truly become a mainstay of consumer electronics."

Google bought HTC

Yesterday something happened that had been predicted for more than a year: a significant part of the production capacity of HTC, the legendary Taiwanese company in the past, came under the wing of Google. The deal is worth $ 1.5 billion, and we are talking about almost two thousand specialists. In fact, this deal means that all future smartphones of the American company will be produced by HTC. And this is good news for both HTC fans and Google fans alike.

In recent years, the Taiwanese company has not been doing very well - the mobile division is suffering losses, which, however, does not prevent HTC from releasing excellent smartphones. Released in 2017, the U11, for example, is guaranteed to enter the top 5 best smartphones of the year and, along with the Google Pixel, holds the palm as the best cameraphone on the market.

Now that HTC is under the wing of Google, the company will be able to make its devices, protecting itself from financial failures - albeit, and perhaps not under its own name. HTC employs some of the best engineers and designers in the industry - and now they work for one of the top tech companies in history. We will most likely see the fruits of their joint work with Google programmers as early as next year, with the release of the new Pixel. The amount of the deal, by the way, once again proves how seriously Google takes its line of its own smartphones, launched that year. It remains to be hoped that new items will also officially appear in Russia.

However, smartphones under the HTC brand will be released for at least another year - it is known that the Taiwanese company plans to show at least one more flagship in 2018.

More details about the new Pixel XL

Meanwhile, Google is preparing to release a new generation of its smartphones - Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2. If you believe the rumors, the latter is produced by LG and will receive a frameless design.

A render of the novelty has leaked to the network - the back cover with the "overhead" glass plate will remain in place, as well as only one camera module. But on the front, the novelty corresponds to the main trend of modern smartphone construction - the frames around the display are very narrow.

In addition, the estimated price of the flagship has become known - it will be cheaper than the iPhone X ($ 999), but more expensive than the iPhone 8 ($ 699) and last year's Pixel XL - $ 849 for the starter model. Well, the future is here (well, almost, the announcement of new products is scheduled for October 5), and you have to pay for it.>
