Come to think of it, Overwatch has been waiting for 18 years. Not the game itself, of course - it's just the first truly new Blizzard project since the release of the first Starcraft in 1998. Not a sequel, not a prequel, or a spin-off - a completely new universe.

Say, of Blizzard for a long time I tried to create an online RPG, code-named Project Titan, the successor to the cult and profitable World of Warcraft. But something did not go well: the game was redesigned from scratch three times, each time starting anew.

And then the developers gave up - and from the scraps of a failed role-playing game they made a shooter that is now conquering the world.

A little more than a month has passed since the full release of Overwatch - an important date for any multiplayer project. A kind of Rubicon, after which it is already possible to draw conclusions and summarize the first results.

So, the conclusion is really simple: Overwatch is, sorry, a dump of your head. An amazing, wonderful game that you want to confess your love right here and now.

will tell you several reasons why you should try Overwatch - and then reluctantly tell you why you might not like it.

It's fun to play

Overwatch is a team-based six-on-six multiplayer first-person shooter. You take control of one of two dozen characters endowed with unique skills. You can change heroes during the match without any restrictions. The goal is to win with your team of rivals in one of several modes (to drag the "cart" to the enemy's base within the allotted time or to capture a control point on the map before him).

Each character (there are 21 in total) is special. He has a set of certain abilities, weapons, appearance and his own history. The thing is, your chosen protégé actually determines your style of play and the overall feel of your gameplay. Are you accustomed to the "standard" attack aircraft from military shooters like Battlefield, with sprints, an underbarrel grenade launcher and a first aid kit? At your service is Soldier 76, a typical Call of Duty-like FPS. For the "fathers" of Quakecreated a Farrah who can soar high into the air and fire rockets from a rocket launcher, saying hello from 1999. And fans of melee damage will appreciate Reinhard - a knight clad in armor with a huge hammer who can knock the entire enemy team to the ground with a powerful blow and cover allies with a powerful shield. Whoever you love to play in other games, even as a crazy demolitionist, even as an archer or cyberninju (there is one) - most likely there is a suitable hero for you. Except that there is no magic in the usual sense in Overwatch.

Moreover, the heroes in a sense are a kind of stereotype of shooters raised to the absolute. What do snipers always dream of? Sit higher, but see through the walls. Please: the Frenchwoman (yes, the heroes here have a nationality) Widowmaker, who became the Widowmaker in the Russian version, shines through the location of opponents through the entire map (!), Her hook-cat helps her to occupy the nearest roof, and a booby-trap warns of an enemy that has crept up behind … British cutie Tracer, who has already become an unspoken symbol of the game, is able, like a flea, to instantly jump short distances across the map and return to the point where she was a few seconds ago, replenishing her previous level of health. An annoying fly that painfully "stings" opponents, distracts them, forces them to constantly look around. The perfect saboteur.

Overwatch, in addition to the obvious Team Fortress 2, for some reason is often compared to Dota and League of Legends. This is not entirely true: on the one hand, the characters have a so-called absolute skill, an ability that often abruptly changes the course of the match and is "charged" for a very (sometimes even painfully long) time. A gravitational impulse that pulls all opponents into one point and immobilizes them, a massive revival of fallen allies, a remotely controlled wheel that after an explosion leaves ashes on a small radius - each character has his own "ult", and there are no useless skills at all.

There is also a conditional division into classes: support heroes heal and cover with shields, attack aircraft - storm, defenders - restrain attacks, "tanks" rush ahead, taking fire on themselves.

But on the other hand, there are no towers, lines and minions here, in its essence it is still a shooter where reflexes, the ability to shoot and, no less important, teamwork are valued.

Easy to learn - hard to master

You can get used to Overwatch in a couple of hours: remember which character is doing what, learn a little map and so on, understand where, in fact, to shoot and when. The game design in the game is outstanding: it is always clear where to run and what to do, what nasty things to expect from enemies and how an ally can help. It is impossible to get confused.

But playing longer and longer, you begin to understand how much you still do not know and cannot do. And right there you want to learn to play better - it is this desire that makes you come back to the game again and again, spend tens, hundreds of hours in it.

Overwatch is actually not as casual as it seems and as detractors say about it. The Internet is full of videos where experienced and skilled players alone, relying only on their individual skill, scatter three opponents at the same time, like children. There are also headshots: one shot - one dead, everything as it should be.

But still more valuable here are command, tactical actions. A well-coordinated team of average “shooters” is likely to defeat six semi-professionals from some Call of Duty who prefer to act one at a time.

It is a very difficult task - to make the game interesting from the first minutes, but capable of intriguing even 100 hours. Blizzard, thankfully, has dealt with it.

It looks and sounds great - and is superbly optimized

Overwatch doesn't set new standards in computer graphics, but it looks amazing, especially in dynamics. The secret is in the work of designers and artists: the proprietary "cartoon" style untied their hands.

The characters are bursting with visual details. For example, a local sniper narrows her eyes sexually while looking through the scope of a sniper rifle. It seems to be a trifle, you can see it only from the side, and even if you know where to look - but the visual style of Overwatchconsists entirely of such little things. The characters are extremely charismatic, their appearance is worked out, it is easy to feel sympathy for them, it is easy to "believe" in them. Tracer has a British accent, Junkrat has no teeth, Hanzo's hands are shaking when shooting a bow, Roadhog has a pig head tattoo on his huge belly - the characters are etched into memory, are remembered. They have unique, individual animations and cues, and they even "sound" differently: after a while you start to determine by the sound (Junkrat, for example, characteristically knocks with a wooden foot on the floor) which adversary is already rushing to you on the first floor of the building to smoke from a comfortable position.

The cards are bright, rich, solid in terms of design, well thought-out.

And yet Overwatch is perfectly optimized. I managed to squeeze an acceptable 40 frames per second out of the game on an old 2nd generation Pentium G and an office 640 GT. What can we say about video cards of the R9 390 level - more than 120 frames per second are provided to you.

Heroes, by the way, are of different nationalities. Russia is represented by the brave Zarya, copied from one of the Blizzard employees. Perhaps this is not the most outwardly attractive character in the game, but she cannot be denied charisma.

Short sessions

One of the main advantages for working people who do not have much free time. Overwatch matches are very dynamic and rarely last more than 10-15 minutes. Matchmaking in the game is terribly fast - entered the game, pressed two buttons - and in half a minute you already put five turrets in a narrow passage for Symmetra. All heroes and abilities are available from the start, you do not need to open anything, buy with in-game currency. In the game itself, you will not have to farm for a long time and tiresomely on the lane, as in the same Dota and League of Legends, before, in fact, start team battles. You can shoot 10 frags already in the first minute of the match.

Blizzard treats each of its projects as scrupulously as possible. Who else in the gaming industry can afford to make a series of short cartoons about the heroes of the game, not inferior to the animation of the great Pixar ?

The project is already working like clockwork: the network code is fine-tuned to shine, the game loads almost instantly, does not crash, quickly picks up players. There is no doubt that Overwatch updates will be released regularly. By investing 2 thousand rubles, you understand that the project will live, develop and prosper for a long, long time. Overwatch is currently played by 10 million people. And this figure is unlikely to drop drastically in the next couple of years.

Comics on the universe of the game (the world, by the way, turned out to be just right), cartoons, tournaments for professional players - Overwatch promises to be almost a new World of Warcraft for Blizzard.

In addition, the game has been brilliantly translated into Russian - and no less impressively dubbed.

Why might you not like Overwatch?

There is still a chance that Overwatch will not hook you.

First, there is no single player campaign here. Generally. The subtleties of the universe and the relationship of characters have to be learned from the network. This is an exclusively multiplayer project, and you should be ready for this.

Secondly, the fast pace. Not even that, the pace is just frantic. It all depends on the character you choose, but in general Overwatch may seem too fast to some. The number of events per minute and effects per square meter of the map is prohibitive.

Overwatch is also not worth buying if you: do not like shooters, do not recognize "cartoonish", albeit stylish, imagery, and have played enough Team Fortress 2 in due time.

Otherwise, Overwatch has been the top virtual drug of recent years, and so far the most compelling candidate for this year's best game.>
