Head assistant

Assistant google, digital assistant google, actually became the central theme of the conference. The assistant's functionality now extends far beyond simple voice commands and the famous "Ok Google " phrase. In fact, in one form or another, it becomes a new fundamental platform for all services and products of the company, from Android to even applications for iOS.

And most importantly, artificial intelligence has learned new unusual techniques that should significantly expand its capabilities and scope.

For example, Google introduced Lens, an AI-based object recognition software platform. It is tied to the camera of your Android smartphone: you point it at an object, artificial intelligence "scans it" and understands what is in front of it. For example, having caught a flower in the lens, you can find out exactly what it is called. And if you point the camera at the sign with the name of the wireless network and the password for it, the smartphone will independently understand what kind of data it is, why they are needed and will automatically connect to the desired network.

The second, seemingly not the biggest, but at the same time one of the most important innovations - now you can communicate with the Google assistant by text, and not just by voice (finally!). The owners of Pixel smartphones released last year had to give commands to the assistant, only talking to him, which was simply not very convenient. Now you can drive in the order in a special window, which means that you can ask the assistant to find the file you need on your smartphone in almost any conditions.

In the same chat, now you can not only order food (“I want a big pizza from Papa John's with pineapples”), but also pay for purchases without jumping into third-party applications. Placed an order (you can use your voice), put your finger on the fingerprint scanner, and paid using a card linked to Android Pay. It's simple.

"Google Photos" has also grown smarter, which is now growing in terms of the number of users even faster than YouTube. The key Photo feature that made it so popular is the ability to search for images using keywords. Just enter what you want to find (“document”, “child”, “cat”, etc.) into the search bar, and the program will show all the photos where, in its opinion, the specified object is. The new version of the program will include the so-called Shared Photos. Having recognized the person in the photo (she can do that too), the application will offer you to share this photo with him with one touch.

Well, and most importantly, any developer can use Google Assistant in their device, be it at least a smartphone, at least a smart watch, at least a refrigerator, and the assistant itself will be available for iPhone owners as a separate application. In fact, this means that this service for the company is much more important than the sale of its own Pixel smartphones, whose trump card was just Google Assistant.

And now about the sad thing: the assistant still does not know how to speak Russian, and, judging by the declared list of languages available in the future, he will not learn even by the end of the year.

Android O: Smarter, More Convenient, Faster

The new version of Android, now known as "O" (later this letter will traditionally turn into the name of some popular sweet), cannot be called revolutionary. This is in many ways a stand-by update, which, however, will bring several necessary and useful functions to the operating system.

First, there will be a picture-in-picture mode, which is well known, for example, to the owners of the latest iPads. After turning on the video on YouTube, you can then press the home button - the application will be minimized, but the video itself will remain in the corner of the screen as a small square that you can move as you like. So you can chat with your friends on Facebook Messenger without distracting from watching the new episode of your favorite show.

Secondly, the notification system has been improved, to which, in fact, there were not many complaints. Google picked up the mechanics from iOS, refined it and called it Notification Dots. Now, when a notification arrives on a smartphone, it is displayed not only in the notification shade. A dot appears on the program icon, and by long pressing the icon, you can view the notification in a small window. This is true in the case of large smartphones, where it is simply inconvenient to reach the top edge of the screen.

Thirdly, Android is able to remember your personal data in Chrome and use it when working with applications. For example, if you logged into your Twitter account via Chrome on your PC or smartphone itself, the system will automatically offer your username and password when you launch the Twitter application, and so on.

Well, a few regular and expected improvements: according to Google, the download speed of Android has doubled, and all programs will start loading and opening faster. The system now works more closely with background processes, so once again we are promised increased battery life.

The eighth numbered version of Android will be released this fall.

Own virtual reality

Modern virtual reality helmets, in fact, are a pair of screens with lenses, and they must be connected to a video signal source: pull wires from a computer or PlayStation 4, insert a smartphone inside.

Google's new device, Standalone VR, is different. Everything that is required for the helmet to work is in it, so to immerse yourself in virtual reality, you just need to put it on your head. No wires.

In addition, the company announced that World Sense technology will debut in the new helmets. They are equipped with special sensors that scan the space around a person in real time and track their movements. This means that while moving in the real world, you will also move in the virtual one. There are no other details about the project yet, which is a pity: I would like to see how the company solved one of the main problems of this concept - the risk of hitting your little toe on something solid while you wander through non-existent worlds.

The helmets will go on sale later this year.>
