The now absolutely inalienable attribute of the Cannes Film Festival - the Palme d'Or - did not appear immediately. The first film screening in Cannes was supposed to take place in 1939, and the winner was to receive the Lumière Cup (named after one of the forefathers of cinema, Louis Lumiere, and the chairman of the jury concurrently), but the war prevented the plans. The first festival took place only in 1946, and they could decide what the main prize would be even later.

The work on the prize was entrusted to various fashion designers of that time, and it was only in 1955 that the festival had a real symbol - the Palme d'Or. There is a version that the idea of its creation belonged to Jean Cocteau. And this idea, in fact, was on the surface: the port of Cannes previously belonged to the Lérins abbey, the coat of arms of which was the very branch (later it appeared on the coat of arms of the city itself). The abbey's motto was no less befitting of the occasion: "The palm rewards the winner."

The first "branch" was cast by the jeweler Lucien Lazon, and the American Delbert Mann received it first of all for the painting "Marty". The award was handed out until 1964, when copyright problems began and it had to be replaced. Palma did not award the winners until 1975, when all the legal squabbles were settled. The new prize has a slightly different design and size. After that, the “branch” changed its appearance several times through the efforts of various artists and jewelers, until a period of stability began in its history: the main partner of the festival in 1998 was the Swiss jewelry and watch house Chopard. He became the author of the new symbol a year before - then the board of directors of the Cannes Film Festival entrusted the house with the task of developing a fresh design of the prize for the 50th anniversary of the film screening.

For the 70th anniversary of the festival and the 20th anniversary of the partnership with Chopard, they decided to change the branch again. The current "Palma" is distinguished not only by its updated design, but also by its "ethics" - it is made in Fairmined yellow gold (18-carat gold mined in compliance with all ethical and environmental standards; it has been made of this gold since 2014, the weight of one palm tree - 118 g) and for the first time adorned with diamonds certified by the RJC (Responsible Jewelry Council). A new branch created by Chopard, - a real piece of haute joaillerie, created over 40 hours by the efforts of five craftsmen. She also has her own secrets. So, for example, if you look at the “cut” of the stem, you can see the heart, which has become one of the symbols of the jewelry and watch house thanks to the Happy Hearts collection. We will know very soon who will be the first to receive this prize.>
