Big smartphones have won. In 2016, it's hard to find a flagship with a display diagonal below five inches, even Apple seems to be focusing on the larger version of the iPhone: the 6 and 6S Plus have optical stabilization, and the 7 Plus has a dual camera. Small versions of these privileges are denied.
It is understandable. Smartphones with large screens (also called the funny word "phablet") are the ideal embodiment of a pocket computer: they hold the battery better, often take better pictures, and the large screen makes them equally convenient for working and consuming content.
But it was not always so. Samsung, the first to dare to make really big smartphones, has long been the object of ridicule with its Galaxy Note line. "Shovel", "finger trainer", "paddle" - if you search, you can still find sharp jokes, pictures and demotivators of those times on the Internet. But the company itself, it seems, did not particularly care about this, and by the time competitors came to their senses and began to increase the display diagonals of their flagships to meet the growing needs of buyers, Samsung already had several years of head start and understanding of what a phablet should be.
That's why the Galaxy Note 7 is the best big smartphone today. Not just a phone with a giant screen - from the very beginning it was created in order to be large, designed in such a way as to be free from many "sores" inherent in this type of device.
This is how the best Android smartphone of our time has turned out.
The Note 7 is arguably the most beautiful smartphone at the moment. A work of art in mobile engineering. Glass and metal are perfectly matched, smoothly flow into each other and shine like a polished mirror. Under the glass surface, there is a texture that plays in the sun with the colors of a rainbow - as if someone doused a smartphone with water and then dripped a little gasoline. The Note 7 has received curved display edges from the Galaxy Edge models, and this is the best that Samsung designers could do: the smartphone not only produces a wow effect, because it visually has virtually no side frames, but also fits perfectly in the hands for its size. It is significantly narrower and lower than the Nexus 6P developed by Huawei and Google., with an identical diagonal (5.7 inches) and even smaller than the iPhone 6S Plus, which has a smaller display. Seriously, if you have big hands, you will probably find it quite comfortable to use it with one hand sometimes.
The Note 7's edges are not curved as much as the Galaxy S7 Edge - they barely distort or annoy. I tested the smartphone for over a week, and during this time I have never accidentally touched its edges.
In two years, Samsung has managed not only to create its own design style, while not repeating Apple, but also to influence the industry as a whole. The leader is the one the Chinese copy. We see more and more glass smartphones from the Middle Kingdom (see Honor 8, Xiaomi Mi5), and Meizu is rumored to be getting ready to introduce a smartphone with curved edges.
I still sometimes just turn my smartphone in my hands - like an expensive designer thing, which, however, can be called without a twinge of conscience.
Design isn't the only thing that makes the Note 7 stand out. From the technical point of view, he has everything that a person can dream of, who is ready to pay 65 thousand rubles for a smartphone. There is no point in describing all the advantages of the local screen: today it is the most advanced display ever installed in mobile devices. Super-AMOLED-matrix with "infinitely" deep blacks, perfect color reproduction and high brightness. And even some "greening" of the picture when the smartphone is tilted can hardly be called a serious drawback against the background of everything else.
It has the same crazy camera as the S7 and S7 Edge - the best in the industry, before the iPhone 7 Plus, at least. With the pictures taken on the Note 7, we were able to decorate two materials from the Berlin IFA exhibition, and looking at the pictures, it is hard to believe that all this was filmed “automatically”, without tripods and fiddling with settings. All the declared features work: almost instant focusing, beautiful bokeh in macro shots, high light sensitivity, thanks to which "night" photos are almost always successful. In the dark without a flash, the Note 7 will see more than your eyes.
Note 7 exists in two versions, and if you decide to buy a smartphone, you will most likely get the version with the Exynos 8890 processor, and the Americans - on the Snapdragon 820, Qualcomm. Both chips are the best in the Android world today, and on paper make the Note 7 one of the fastest smartphones in the world. In practice, to my great regret, this is not quite the case. I can't say that Note 7 slows down (although the first launch is "something"), but you can see that for some reason some animations are given to it with some strange effort, and when scrolling, browser pages may start scrolling "in pieces ". At the same time, the smartphone "tears" any three-dimensional game at maximum settings, so there is only one conclusion: TouchWiz is still a thorn in it. SamsungI've worked hard over the past two years to make my user interface nice to the eye and reduce its resource dependency, but that's not enough. It still seems that Samsung has solved many problems by brute force: instead of optimizing and fine-tuning the code, it has installed a more powerful processor and more RAM. Looking at how the Nexus 6P (which has a previous generation processor and less RAM) smoothly makes the most powerful smartphone in the world, it is a little frustrating.
To be fair, if it weren't for TouchWiz, the Note 7 wouldn't have gotten a digital pen. It was modernized again: it became even more compact, more beautiful and, most importantly, it acquired a special mechanism - now it can be clicked like an automatic handle. It seems like a useless little thing, but it works - you no longer perceive the pen as a stylus of the era of the PDA.
To be honest, I've never seen the point in the S Pen, the Note is great on its own, and I usually only use the pen to describe how it works in material. Note 7, if not changed my mind, made me admit that the stylus may still be useful nine years after the iPhone was released. Let's put aside the ability to write with your hand and draw - the former is too dull, and for the latter, the response time is too long. I tried, following my overseas colleague Joanna Stern, to write this review by hand on the Note 7's screen - but I quickly gave up. Inconvenient.
So the two most useful features of the pen are crop photos or screenshots and create gifs from videos. I used both of them quite often. Need to send a large chunk of text, but don't feel like flicking your finger across the screen? We take out the pen, carefully and accurately outline the area, we get the finished screenshot. With "gifs" everything is also simple: we launch the video (for example, on YouTube), select the capture area, click on Play, and then on Stop - voila, another Internet meme is ready. Plus, since the Note 7 is waterproof, you can control it underwater with the stylus. I don't know why, but you can.
All in all, the S Pen is still not a reason to buy the Note 7. But now you will not think that you have overpaid for absolutely useless functionality for geeks. But the built-in iris scanner can be referred to the category of such functionality. In short, you can unlock your smartphone without hands - with your own eyes. We press the power button and look at the scanner located near the front camera peephole. The problem is that, firstly, it may not work if you are wearing glasses or lenses, and secondly, you need to open your eyes wide, which looks very funny from the outside. A man sits and does not attract attention to himself, and then suddenly begins to bulge his eyes, looking at a smartphone …
In general, it is less convenient and faster than placing your finger on a button on the front panel.
But for what it is worth overpaying, so for the battery life. I don't understand how Samsung could fit such a capacious battery into such a thin case and leave space for the stylus there. To land the Note 7 in a day, you need to try very hard. By the end of the day, I had about 20 percent remaining, and the screen counter showed seven hours. At the same time, the Always On function was always on - the smartphone screen constantly displays the time and the number of missed notifications. Conveniently.
The smartphone charges very quickly - I have never put it on at night. I just got up in the morning, and while I took a shower and ate breakfast, the Note 7 had time to fill up with energy by 60 percent.
Despite a successful start, Samsung hastily withdraws Note 7 shipments, risking a loss of nearly $ 1 billion. The reason you probably know is that smartphone batteries explode when charged. The jokes about how Samsung is “blowing up the market” and the fireproof gloves in the kit are, of course, funny, but, in an amicable way, it's a shame for the Koreans. The Note 7 deserves good sales, rave reviews, and satisfied customers. This is an example of how the company, year after year, improves the invented concept and brings it to the ideal. In all honesty, it's hard for me now to name a more technically and designer smartphone (at least until I get my hands on the iPhone 7 Plus). Not a single smartphone over the past year has caused me so many positive emotions.
The impression is spoiled only by the marketing campaign that unfolded after the presentation of Apple, these advertising banners "this seventh has unlimited possibilities." In my opinion, the S7 Edge and Note 7 are already good enough not to be compared to the iPhone, and even in this oaky way. Trying to drop someone else's face, you lose yours.
I don't think the Note 7's exploding batteries are the result of Samsung's deliberate disregard for safety, this whole situation looks more like a tragic accident.
However, the fact remains - and I cannot leave it out of parentheses: there is a possibility (about 0.1%) that, having bought a Note 7 from the first batches, you will burn it on the charge. Samsung, to its credit, did not spoil its image and freely changes the purchased Note 7 for new ones in its centers. My test sample, by the way, did not even get very hot while charging.
The Russians are partially insured against the "hot" fate: on September 16, the Galaxy Note 7 was supposed to go on sale - but this, obviously, will not happen. But when it does come out with us, you will know for sure that nothing will happen to its battery. And you can safely use the best big smartphone of today.>
