The bikini was invented by the Parisian fashion designer Louis Rear. He was an automotive engineer by training, but retrained after inheriting a lingerie company from his mother. He also came up with the name for the swimsuit - bikini. This was the name of an atoll in the Pacific Ocean, where a couple of days before the first demonstration of the swimsuit, the United States conducted nuclear tests.
The first bikini show took place on July 5, 1946 at the edge of the Molitor pool in Paris. The Moulin Rouge cabaret dancers came out to demonstrate the invention of Louis Rear. They had to replace the models who refused to put on the novelty and go out to the public. A bathing suit that covers the minimum of the body, they considered obscene. And Rear himself said that a bikini cannot be considered real if it does not go through a wedding ring.

The presentation of the bikini caused a real scandal. The novelty was condemned by the Catholic Church, forbidding women to wear "demonic clothes." But this did not frighten Louis Réard. The bikini was advertised as a swimsuit "telling everything about the girl except her mother's maiden name."
The first Miss World contest took place in 1951. The winner was Kikki Hokansson of Sweden, who entered the awards ceremony in a bikini. This was the first and last such event in the history of the event. Hokansson's act was condemned by the Pope, and the Vatican threatened that a number of Catholic countries may refuse to participate in the competition.
Bikinis began to conquer the world in the 50s. In many ways, this was facilitated by celebrities who appeared in a revealing swimsuit on the screen. Brigitte Bardot starred in a bikini in Roger Vadim's And God Created Woman, Marilyn Monroe in Niagara, and Rachel Welch portrayed a cave woman in a bikini made of animal skins in Million Years BC.

The commotion was caused by the appearance of Diana Dors at the Venice Film Festival in 1955. The actress, who called herself a British sex symbol, sailed to the show at the handola, dressed in only one mink bikini.
The song contributed to the popularity of bikinis in the United States. The composition "Itsy Bitsy petit bikini" spurred the sales of swimwear. And even the first Barbie doll to hit stores in 1959 wore a black and white striped bikini.

In 2013, Miss World canceled the traditional bikini show. The competition was then held in Bali, and the organizers were afraid to offend the feelings of Indonesian Muslims. But a year later, the decision to abandon the swimsuit runway was finally made. It was replaced by a beachwear show, which, according to the organizers, is more like a fashion competition.
Over time, from a purely beach wardrobe, a bikini has turned into a thing for outings. Swimwear options in rhinestones and without "lit up" on numerous red carpets and even on the stage of the Oscar ceremony.
